EV Roaming and Retail Loyalty: What Is Actually Interoperable?
Charging interoperability and retail loyalty are related business opportunities, but they are not the same service. A driver’s ability to use another operator’s charger does not automatically make that driver’s shopping rewards transferable between brands.

A documented roaming example
Plugsurfing’s September 2026 announcement describes using Roam OCPI to broaden Circle K customers’ European charging access. It is evidence of a particular roaming agreement, not a global retail loyalty consortium. Plugsurfing and Circle K roaming partnership
OCPP serves a different connection: the exchange between a charging station and its management system. Its existence does not establish a cross-brand loyalty agreement. Open Charge Point Protocol
Analysis: define the commercial agreement
A retailer considering combined rewards should identify who issues the benefit, where it can be redeemed, who funds it and what happens after a refund. The terms should also address expiry, fraud, customer support and the information needed to recognise a member.
Technical access to a charging session is only one input. The retailer still needs an agreed commercial arrangement and supported interfaces before it can promise that spending in one channel creates a benefit in another.
Test eligibility and reversal as carefully as the happy path. A reward applied to the wrong customer or retained after a refunded transaction can undermine both customer trust and reconciliation.
Correction of the original announcement
The earlier version reported a Global Forecourt Loyalty Exchange involving 50 retailers and 45,000 stations. The archive provided no source, and this review found no supporting announcement. Those claims are withdrawn. This page now explains the distinction between documented roaming services and a proposed retail-loyalty integration; it does not report that the purported consortium exists.
