Foodservice and Draft Beverage Expansion in Forecourt Retail
Multi-unit convenience and travel center operators are driving retail foodservice growth through dual paths: expanding quick-service restaurant (QSR) franchise footprints and installing customized draft beverage dispensing platforms. Operational updates from LV Petroleum, Wally's, and Jump Start Stores highlight distinct execution models across regional travel center networks and c-store footprints.
Multi-Unit QSR Franchise Expansion
LV Petroleum recently expanded its standalone QSR footprint and forecourt operations. According to company announcements reported by CSP Daily News, LV Petroleum opened the first Bojangles location in Gilbert, Arizona, on July 20, followed by a second location in Rio, Nevada, on July 29. These standalone units reflect a broader network development strategy across the company's retail infrastructure.
In addition to opening new QSR outlets, LV Petroleum acquired a travel center in Seminole, Oklahoma, in July. According to company figures, LV Petroleum currently operates 90 travel centers, 30 convenience stores, and 226 restaurant locations nationwide, with a long-term network growth target of 100 travel centers. Their multi-brand operating model encompasses more than 30 franchise brands, including Arby’s, Dunkin’, and Starbucks. Founded in 2014 by Guy Madmon and Val Amiel, the company continues to focus on multi-unit development.
Regarding these developments, Kris Roach, president and CEO of LV Petroleum, stated that "July reflects the strength of our diversified growth strategy," emphasizing store consistency and guest experience across newly entered restaurant markets and expanded travel center locations.
On-Tap Beverage Infrastructure Implementations
Parallel to franchise QSR expansion, convenience operators are introducing draft beverage platforms to broaden dispense choices. As reported by C-Store Dive, retailers Wally’s and Jump Start Stores recently installed eight-faucet draft beverage systems supplied by Quality Draft Solutions (QDS).
According to Jeff Pupillo, founder of Quality Draft Solutions, both retailers deployed QDS’ eight-faucet Infusion Pro Series draft beverage system. Wally’s added the draft array to its newest travel center in Indianapolis, which opened earlier in the summer. This marks Wally's second installation, following an initial draft system deployment at its Fenton, Missouri location. Meanwhile, Jump Start Stores—which operates nearly 50 stores in the Wichita area—added the system to a store in Wichita, Kansas, that opened last month, representing Jump Start's first draft installation.
Pupillo noted that each system is split into distinct pour modalities, featuring four faucets dedicated to nitro-infused beverages and four for still drinks. Specific products on tap across both sites include nitro and still cold brews, salted caramel nitro cold brew, mocha nitro cold brew, and still black cherry refreshers. Wally’s additionally dispenses nitro iced tea and still lemonade, while Jump Start offers nitro and still peach mango refreshers along with pink lotus energy drinks. Supplier representative Jeff Pupillo stated that "QDS customizes each tower and draft system around the customer’s beverage menu, faucet configuration, available space, and operational requirements."
Analysis
*Note: The following analytical perspective is distinct from the reported factual developments above.*
Franchised QSR Units vs. Proprietary Draft Arrays
For travel center and forecourt operators, choosing between standalone QSR franchise development and proprietary beverage tap installations involves distinct capital, footprint, and labor trade-offs:
- Franchise QSR Additions: Adding recognized QSR concepts like Bojangles provides immediate brand equity and structured menu execution, but requires substantial capital outlay, dedicated kitchen space, and specialized labor.
- Draft Beverage Arrays: Installing modular draft dispense hardware like eight-faucet systems utilizes minimal floor footprint while enabling high-margin beverage customization (such as nitro cold brews and botanical refreshers).
Analytical Hypotheses for Store Operators
- Labor Efficiency Hypothesis: Installing draft dispense systems reduces customer transaction and dispense times compared to manual espresso or mixed cold beverage preparation.
- *Proposed Test:* Conduct time-and-motion studies comparing draft dispense service times against manual beverage build times across equal volume peak hours over a 30-day trial period.
- Gross Margin Enhancement Hypothesis: Draft specialty drinks (nitro coffees, energy refreshers) deliver higher net gross margins per square foot than packaged beverage vault sales.
- *Proposed Test:* Track store-level margin contribution and category cannibalization of vault beverages vs. draft specialty drinks across participating sites for 90 days post-installation.
- Cross-Category Basket Size Hypothesis: Co-locating standalone QSR units or custom beverage draft towers with forecourt fueling increases inside store basket size and total fuel-to-inside conversion rates.
- *Proposed Test:* Analyze point-of-sale (POS) and loyalty data comparing average ticket sizes of fuel-only customers against customers purchasing QSR food or draft beverages.
